Listing Title: Girls on the Run Napa & Solano
What They Do: Inspire girls ages to be joyful, healthy, caring and confident using a life skill curriculum that creatively combines engaging discussions and experiential activities with running or moving. Girls are empowered to be leaders in school, at home and in the playground, today, tomorrow and into adulthood.
More Info: Girls are provided young girls healthy living strategies through experiential learning discussions, out-door play activities, and running or moving out-of-school throughout Napa & Solano counties. Young girls (ages 8 to 13), and particularly, those who come from traditionally under-represented ethnic and racial groups and low income families are given the opportunity to participate in the preventative youth development program that will positively impact their social, mental, emotional and physical health so that they are more resilient. The group of girls is lead by a volunteer life coach that are high school or college students, teachers or parents or community advocates.
Long Service Description: Girls on the Run Napa & Solano uses the evidence based curricula developed and evaluated by Girls on the Run International. Girls on the Run’s 10 week curriculum carefully and thoughtfully includes Richard Lerner’s 5Cs + 1 – lessons targeting the promotion of competence, confidence, connection, character, caring and contribution to the greater good of society. Specifically, 20 lessons focus on promoting competencies and values related to self-awareness and self-care, selecting healthy social relationships, and empowering girls to have a voice in their personal and community well-being.
The program is offered in the fall and spring of the school year for 10 weeks, twice a week and is facilitated by two volunteer life coaches from the community, school or parent group. Each session (75 mins) focuses on a life-skill topic and follows a lesson plan for consistency/structure that the volunteer life coaches are trained on. Additionally, the girls experience the gift of giving through a community impact project and the power of achievement through a non-competitive 3.1 miles, 5K.
